Why FAFSA Appeal exists
Every year, families get financial-aid awards built on income they no longer earn — and most never find out they can ask for a recalculation.
FAFSA Appeal started after watching families get blindsided by the financial-aid process: a layoff or income drop hits after the FAFSA is already filed, the award letter lands months later based on old numbers, and no one tells them they have the right to appeal. Colleges can recalculate aid based on current circumstances under federal law (Professional Judgment) — but only if you ask, in writing, with the right documentation, in the format they expect.
This site exists to make that path clear and honest: what an appeal is, when it applies, exactly what to gather and say, and what outcomes are realistic. We are not affiliated with the U.S. Department of Education or any college, and we don't promise results — the decision always belongs to the school. What we provide is a strong, well-organized version of your case.
Who's behind it
I'm Cass Neilson — the founder, and the person who writes the guides, builds the tools, and maintains the templates on this site.
I'm not a financial aid officer, and I don't claim credentials I don't have. What I do is read the primary sources most families never see — the Federal Student Aid Handbook, studentaid.gov, the Federal Register, and College Board's own published guidance — and turn them into plain-English explanations, free calculators, and fill-in templates. Every factual claim on this site links back to where it came from, so you never have to take my word for anything.
The free guides and tools will always be free. The $49 template packs exist for families who want the letters, worksheets, and scripts already written — they fund the site, and they're covered by a 14-day no-questions refund. If a page here saves your family real money on college, that's the whole point.
How we keep it trustworthy
- Every factual claim is tied to a primary source — see our Sources.
- We follow a documented editorial & fact-check process.
- Every guide carries a visible "last updated" date tied to the aid year.
